Job Description:

 Supervise a small cohort of apprentices (2-4) using lathes and milling machines, in our on-site training workshop

  • Instruct the apprentices in use of the machines (training will be given), basic principles, bench work, measurement etc.
  • Support recruitment of new apprentices (with senior managers)
  • Review training plans (with admin and HR support) and progress made
  • Liaise with training provider (college), share updates on apprentice progress
  • Be a mentor to the apprentices and support mentoring by others (training will be given)


Suggested 75-100 days per annum

In practice this could be working an average of 2 or 3 days a week for around 30-35 weeks of the year.  The role is seasonal i.e. new apprentices start in September, new recruitment takes place in April, so some months will require more time than others.


Person Description:

This is a part-time, flexible hours role which will suit someone who has chosen not to work fixed or full-time hours, and would like flexibility.  It could be ideal for someone currently or recently working as a machinist, who enjoys passing on their knowledge and experience to others.

Skills and Qualifications: Essential

Machinist apprenticeship and experience working as a machinist

Good communication skills

Able to give encouragement and support

Able to participate in training and development and learn new skills and knowledge

Skills and Qualifications: Desirable

Knowledge of current apprentice training and qualifications would be beneficial but is not required.
